Kids Snowboard Size Calculator
Find the right snowboard length for your child in seconds.
What size snowboard does my child need? A child weighing 20 to 25 kg needs a 90 to 100 cm board. 30 to 35 kg needs 110 to 120 cm. 40 to 50 kg needs 120 to 135 cm. The board should reach between the child's chin and nose when standing upright. Beginners size down 3 to 5 cm for easier turn initiation. Weight matters more than height for snowboards because it determines how the board flexes. Enter your child's weight and height below for a precise recommendation.
Unlike height-only charts, this calculator uses weight as the primary sizing factor (the way snowboard shops actually fit kids) and adjusts for ability level. A light beginner and a heavy intermediate of the same height need boards 10 to 15 cm apart.
Kids Snowboard Size Chart by Age and Weight
Weight is the primary sizing factor for snowboards. If your child's weight and height suggest different sizes, follow the weight recommendation. Heights and weights are 50th percentile averages.

Why Weight Matters More Than Height for Snowboards
Snowboard sizing is weight-driven because body weight determines how much the board flexes underfoot. A heavier child compresses the board more, creating edge grip and turn response. A lighter child cannot flex a board that is too long, making it stiff and hard to turn. Two children of the same height but different weights need different board lengths. A 130 cm child weighing 25 kg needs a shorter board (95 to 105 cm) than a 130 cm child weighing 35 kg (105 to 115 cm). This is different from ski sizing where height is the primary factor. Most manufacturer size charts printed on snowboard packaging show weight ranges for this reason.
Should I Rent or Buy a Kids Snowboard?
Rent for the first 1 to 2 seasons. Children grow quickly and may outgrow their board mid-season. Many resorts offer season-long rental packages for 100 to 200 EUR (110 to 220 USD) that include board, boots, and bindings with size swaps included. Consider buying once your child rides 10 or more days per season, has a stable weight for their age, and has committed to snowboarding over skiing. A quality used kids setup (board, bindings, boots) costs 120 to 250 EUR (130 to 275 USD). Check that the board has no delamination, cracks, or severely damaged edges before buying used.
When to Switch to an Adult Snowboard
The transition typically happens between age 12 and 15, when the child reaches approximately 50 kg and 150 cm. Signs it is time to switch: the child maxes out the longest kids board available (usually 140 to 150 cm), they feel unstable at speed or in choppy snow, or their boot size exceeds US 7 (EU 40). Adult boards are heavier and stiffer, so start with a shorter adult board (chin height) in a soft to medium flex (3 to 5 on the 1 to 10 scale). Do not jump to an advanced stiff board even if the child is a strong rider on kids equipment.
Wide Boards for Kids with Big Feet
Toe and heel drag is a real issue for kids with feet that are large relative to their weight. If the boot hangs over the edge of the board by more than 1 to 2 cm on either side, the child will catch their toes or heels in the snow during turns. Look for "wide" versions of kids boards if available, or choose a board with a waist width that is at least 1 cm wider than the boot sole length. This becomes more common from boot size US 5 (EU 37) and up. The Boot Size Converter can help you check your child's exact Mondopoint measurement.
Kids Snowboard Stance and Binding Setup
Most kids ride a centered, duck stance (both feet angled outward, typically +12 to -12 degrees or +15 to -15 degrees). This makes it easier to ride switch (backwards), which beginners do frequently by accident. Stance width should be approximately shoulder width. The Snowboard Stance Calculator can compute exact angles and width based on your child's height. Do not set bindings too wide as it makes turns harder for small legs. For very young children (under 6), some rental setups use a narrower stance that grows with the child.

Frequently asked questions
What size snowboard for a 30 kg child?
100 to 110 cm for a beginner, 105 to 115 cm for an intermediate rider. The board should reach approximately chin height when standing upright.
Should I use height or weight to size a kids snowboard?
Weight. Snowboard sizing is weight-primary because body weight determines how the board flexes. Two children of the same height but different weights need different board lengths. Most manufacturers print weight ranges on their boards for this reason.
Is it OK to buy a longer snowboard for my child to grow into?
Only 3 to 5 cm longer than recommended, never more than 10 cm. A board that is too long is difficult to turn, reduces confidence, and makes learning harder. If your child is growing fast, renting is more practical.
When should my child switch to an adult snowboard?
At approximately 50 kg and 150 cm, usually between age 12 and 15. Signs: the longest kids board feels too short, the child is unstable at speed, or boot size exceeds US 7 (EU 40).
Does my child need a wide snowboard?
If their boots hang more than 1 to 2 cm over the edge of the board, yes. This is common from boot size US 5 (EU 37) and up. Toe and heel drag causes catches during turns. Check if a wide version is available in the recommended length.
What binding angles for a kids snowboard?
A centered duck stance at +12 to -12 degrees or +15 to -15 degrees for most children. This makes riding switch easier. Stance width should be approximately shoulder width. Use the Snowboard Stance Calculator for exact settings.
Recommendations are general guidelines based on industry sizing principles. Individual factors such as strength, coordination, and riding frequency may require adjustments. Always check the manufacturer's weight range printed on the board. For the best fit, consult a certified snowboard technician at your local shop.
