Splitboard Size Calculator

Find your splitboard length from height, weight and skill level. Makers size a splitboard like a freeride board, so this is the freeride length from the snowboard size model.

Inputs

Your splitboard length

159 cm

Range 157 to 161 cm. The same rider on an all-mountain board: 154 cm. Board lengths are sold in centimetres everywhere, so they stay in centimetres here.

This is the freeride length from the snowboard size calculator, the same model and the same numbers. Pick the model you want, then check this length against that board's weight range.

Why a Splitboard Is Sized Like a Freeride Board

A splitboard is a snowboard cut lengthwise into two halves with clips that join them. On the climb you walk on the halves like skis, with climbing skins underneath; at the top you clip them back into a board and ride down. That is why weight counts twice: you ride the board, and you also carry it uphill.

Jones advises being conservative when sizing up. A longer board means heavier halves on the climb and harder kick turns on a steep skin track. Float in powder comes from rocker and nose shape at least as much as from length. Jones also says to stick to wide sizes if you have big feet: a narrow splitboard is sketchy on steep, firm terrain, where boot drag catches the snow.

A typical splitboard weighs 3.0 to 3.7 kg (6.6 to 8.2 lb), against roughly 2.7 to 3.2 kg (6.0 to 7.1 lb) for a solid snowboard of the same length. The difference is the clips and hardware.

Where these numbers come from

The sizing rule is the makers'. Jones' splitboard size guide tells riders that their ideal splitboard size is the same as their freeride or powder board, to be conservative sizing up, and that big footed riders should stick to wide sizes; the Jones Solution page says it can be ridden in your traditional freeride size. Burton's Hometown Hero splitboard carries the same weight bands as the Burton Custom. The weight tables are from the Burton and Jones product pages.

The length formula is ours. It is the model of the snowboard size calculator with the freeride style, and like that page it is this site's own convention: no standard sets a snowboard length.

The weights of individual boards are from evo's splitboard listings.

Frequently asked questions

What size splitboard do I need?

The same length as your freeride or powder snowboard. For a 175 cm (5 ft 9 in), 75 kg (165 lb) intermediate rider that is about 159 cm, within 157 to 161 cm. Check the result against the maker's weight range for the board you are buying.

Should a splitboard be longer than a snowboard?

Longer than an all-mountain board, not longer than a freeride board. The freeride length this page gives is about 5 cm more than the all-mountain length for the same rider. Jones advises being conservative when sizing up, because you carry the extra length uphill.

Can I use my freeride board size for a splitboard?

Yes. Jones says your ideal splitboard size is the same as your freeride or powder board, and Burton gives its Hometown Hero splitboard the same weight ranges as the Burton Custom. If you already ride a freeride board you like, that length is your starting point.

How much does a splitboard weigh?

Typically 3.0 to 3.7 kg (6.6 to 8.2 lb). evo lists the Jones Solution 161 at 3240 g (7.1 lb) and a Frontier 162 at 3420 g (7.5 lb). A solid snowboard of the same length weighs roughly 2.7 to 3.2 kg (6.0 to 7.1 lb); the difference is the clips and hardware.

Can I cut my snowboard into a splitboard?

Technically yes: Voile sells DIY split kits with the clips and hardware for it. A factory splitboard, though, is built with a reinforced inner edge and a profile designed for the two halves, which a cut solid board does not have.
