How Splitboard Bindings Differ

A splitboard binding has two modes. On the climb it pivots at the toe on each half and the highback folds down so you can stride; for the ride down it locks onto pucks that join the two halves. Size counts from the pivot: a boot too long for its size overhangs past the pivot and shortens every stride, which is why the advice is to go up a size only when the boot is long for its size.

There are two mounting systems. Spark, Voile, K2 and Nitro mount on Voile style pucks and are compatible with each other; Karakoram uses its own interface, which is not.

Hardboot splitboarding is a separate path: ski touring boots on pin bindings such as Spark's and Phantom's, sized by boot sole length (BSL) as in ski touring. The ski boot size page explains BSL.

Where these numbers come from

The sizes are the makers'. Spark R&D's unisex chart, with US, EU and Mondopoint; Plum's US and UK sizes as fixation-plum.com states them; Voile and Karakoram from their product pages. Spark's own Mondopoint column runs about half a size below Burton's conversion (Spark pairs US 8.5 with Mondopoint 26, Burton with 26.5), so the calculator reads Spark in the column you enter rather than converting. Plum publishes US sizes only; a Mondopoint entry is converted to US men's with Burton's arithmetic, as on the snowboard boot size page.

The advice on boots between sizes is riders' practice from the Teton Gravity Research forum, not a maker rule and not a rule of this site.

Frequently asked questions

Are splitboard bindings the same size as snowboard bindings?

No, and they are not the same across brands either. Spark R&D M fits US men's 8.5 to 10.5, while Plum M fits US 6.5 to 8.5, about two sizes smaller. Size by the chart of the brand you are buying.

Do Spark bindings fit Karakoram pucks?

No. Spark, Voile, K2 and Nitro bindings mount on Voile style pucks and work with each other, while Karakoram uses its own interface. A Spark binding needs Voile style pucks, not a Karakoram interface.

What size Spark bindings for size 10 boots?

Spark M. It covers US men's 8.5 to 10.5, so a US 10 is near the top of M, just below the M and L line at 10.5. Only a boot that is long for its size would push you to L.

Can I use ski boots on a splitboard?

Yes, with a hardboot setup: ski touring boots on dedicated splitboard hardboot bindings, such as the pin binding systems from Spark and Phantom. They are sized by boot sole length (BSL), as in ski touring, not by shoe size.
